Hazardous Material
Hazardous material accidents or spills can disrupt business and cause harm to people. In addition, hazmat accidents can have long-lasting effects and damage to your facility. In the event of a hazardous material incident, have an emergency response plan ready, including an evacuation plan, and emergency supplies. HD Supply has the emergency preparedness products you need.
Prepare
Many common products you use today, contain hazardous chemicals – liquid, solid, or gas. Hazardous materials include everyday products such as cleaners and paint.
As a safety precaution, always have the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) readily available for every chemical used at your facility.
Help prevent hazmat accidents by training staff on proper handling and storage of hazardous and chemical materials:
- Identify and label all hazardous materials
- Follow recommended uses, precautions, and disposal instructions on labels
- Store different types of hazardous materials separately
- Use and store hazardous materials with proper ventilation
- Do not handle hazardous materials if you have not been properly trained
- Train and practice what to do in case of a hazmat spill
Respond
For minor spills or accidents, respond by containing the hazardous material with proper spill kits and other safety equipment. In severe cases, you may need to bring in professional emergency responders and evacuate the building.
- Use protective clothing/gear as needed
- Prevent people from entering the area
- Use spill kits to confine spill
- Find the source and stop the spill
Recover
Once the hazmat incident has been cleaned and the area has been properly decontaminated, you will need to record the spill. Take time to evaluate the causes to prevent another incident. Certain types of spills need to be reported to EPA and/or OSHA.
