California Proposition 65

Proposition 65, known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, aims to protect drinking water sources and California citizens from exposure to chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

Businesses are required to give “clear and reasonable” warnings before knowingly exposing anyone to a chemical above the listed levels. Warnings are commonly posted in businesses or public areas affected by chemicals.

Often, business owners, hotel owners, apartment owners, and managers will post warning signs to notify tenants, guests, and employees of the presence of chemicals on the Proposition 65 list, such as pesticides, lead paint, or asbestos.
