Even the most seasoned professional may have questions about pool maintenance from time to time. That's why we have our direct pool care support through AquaGuard® at 1.800.SOS.POOL (1.800.767.7665). Many of the most frequently asked questions involve pool chemicals and how to use them.

What Type Of Chlorine Should I Use In My Pool?

Chlorine comes in many forms, including:

  • Concentrated Tablets Trichlor tablets are the most popular form of chlorine/sanitizer used. They can be stored for long periods of time and will retain their strength as long as they are not exposed to water. Trichlor has a high active ingredient percentage, is stabilized, dissolves slowly, and lasts longer than liquid chlorine and calcium hypochlorite.

  • LiquidSodium hypochlorite has a short shelf life and needs to be used as soon as possible. Sodium hypochlorite starts working right away and is often used for an immediate boost in chlorine levels. It also raises the pH of your water.

  • GranularDichlor is a stabilized granular chlorine that dissolves quickly and is pH neutral. Dichlor can be stored for long periods of time if not exposed to water.

To determine the best type of chlorine for your pool, it is important to consider cost, storage, and how quickly you need the chlorine to start working.

How Do I Control The Alkalinity In My Pool?

If you balance total alkalinity, you will have less fluctuation in your pH levels. It is recommended that you test alkalinity at least once a week, before testing the pH. The alkalinity of your pool should be between 80 and 120 parts per million.

What Is Pool Stabilizer And How Is It Helpful?

Cyanuric acid, or CYA, is used as a pool stabilizer. CYA can help you reduce your chlorine consumption. CYA should only be used in outdoor pools.
